Keep It Green Ideas, Part 3
This is the third in a series of articles about using simple green ideas. Most people cannot afford large do it yourself projects or to hire someone to install solar products on their homes. The ideas here can be used by anyone at almost any income level.
The eco-friendly sites around the Internet all say reduce, recycle, and reuse as the best methods for helping keep the earth green. There really are many simple green ideas if you take even a little time to search for them. One way we have reduced our electricity costs has been to turn down our heat or turn up the air conditioner settings. The company that services our heating/air conditioning system told us to keep the temperature at one setting. By not changing it for day and night, we have saved money each month even during very cold months. If you turn the heat way down when you are gone or asleep, the system has to work harder if the temperature is turned way up. You can save as much as 3 % of heating costs with each degree you turn down the heat. Again, keeping a constant temperature is a good thing. Another simple green idea is to use a laptop instead of a desktop computer and cut as much as three-quarters of your electricity. It also helps to turn off the PC or laptop at the end of the day. Restarting the computer each day also helps clear memory and sometimes problems in the computer.
More simple green ideas for around the home and even the office are to change light bulbs to the compact florescent type. In fact, you will need to do that by 2012 anyway as the incandescent bulbs are being phased out. It was mentioned to turn off your PC, but you can also plug other appliances into a power strip and turn them off when not in use (saves time and money!). When you drive your car for shopping, plan your route to save miles, and buy in bulk. With gas prices rising past $3.00, we all need to save here. You may also find reducing your mileage can save on car insurance premiums.
Much of the time, we talk about solar energy as something for big corporations will use. The truth is we can all participate in this by using solar lighting. Solar lights are available in a variety of styles, sizes, and uses. Solar lights are great because you do not have to wire them, you don't pay for electricity, they are simple to install, the bulbs last for years, they come in many styles, and they add light and decoration. You may need lights on your driveway or a walkway. You could use one or two solar lamp posts or several small lights to line the area. You could use solar spot lights for a walkway or to highlight landscaping. Solar lights help with safety because they come on automatically at night and turn off during the day. You can also get small lights that can sit on a table or deck posts for decks or use in campers.

A Salad a Day Keeps the Doctor Away: The Health Benefits of Green Salads
Eating a Green Salad every day is one of the healthiest habits you can get into.
Green salads are bursting with vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables. Eating two cups of Romaine lettuce alone will give you a nice boost of vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, calcium, folic acid, and many more important nutrients. Add in some carrots, tomatoes, and olive oil-based dressing and you can forget about your multivitamin pills! Raw vegetables and fruits are also bursting with antioxidants, which protect against many types of cancer and other diseases.
Green salads are also high in dietary fiber. Those same two cups of romaine lettuce will give you about 10% of your daily allotment of fiber. Fiber not only improves digestive health, it also helps protect the body against heart disease and many types of cancer. Not only that, eating a diet high in fiber will help you lose weight. Many foods high in fiber are "bulky" but relatively low calorie, so you will fill up faster, eat less food, and consume fewer calories in the food you do eat.
If your goal is weight loss, eating a large green salad before your meal is an especially good way to fill up on health but low calorie vegetables and fruits, so you eat less of your higher calorie entree. Just leave off the high fat dressings and bacon bits, or replace them with heart health vinaigrettes and walnuts, which are rich in essential Omega-3 fatty acids.
The Perfect Salad
As you've probably guessed, a wimpy little salad with iceberg lettuce and a single anemic tomato slice is not going to cut it. If iceberg lettuce is what you're used to, I'm not asking you to immediately start cracking out the arugula. I'm not a big fan of arugula myself. But do start mixing basic iceberg lettuce with more nutritious leaf lettuces, especially Romaine.
Even if you're an experienced salad eater, consider experimenting with alternative toppings. Carrots and tomatoes make a great start, but have you considered the following (not all in the same salad!):
spinach, arugula, watercress, sprouts, parsley, cilantro, red cabbage, radish, beet, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, zucchini, green peppers, red peppers, red onion, shallot, baby corn, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, artichoke hearts, green beans, peas, chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans, button mushrooms, baby bella mushrooms, shitake mushrooms, black olives, kalamata olives, avocados, walnuts, cashews, almonds, apples, pears, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, mandarin oranges, blood oranges, pineapples, currants, raisins, dried cranberries, pine nuts
In addition to bacon bits (real bacon, not fake!), other healthy(ish) toppings for carnivores include grilled chicken or fish (tuna and salmon are especially good) and grilled sirloin strips. Hardboiled eggs are excellent choices, and one of the tastiest salads I've ever eaten starred thinly sliced grilled duck with walnuts and raspberry vinaigrette. Greeks do fabulous things with a light crumbling of feta cheese health .
The health salad dressings are the vinaigrettes, which are mixes of oil (preferably olive or canola oil), vinegar, and spices or other flavorings. Vinaigrette dressings are actually quite easy to mix yourself, but you can buy good ones in stores as well. My favorite brand is Newman's Own.
