Just before the arrival of the Great Depression, more than one
hundreds of companies manufactured glassware in the United States
States. At the end of the Depression, fewer than fifty
percent of these companies remained in business. Of these
companies, seven became major players in the production of
depression glass, and the seven companies use a
little more than 90 patterns to decorate their wares.
Indiana Glass, Hocking, Federal, USA Glass, Jeanette
Glass, MacBeth-Evans, and Hazel-Atlas produced hundreds
of thousands of pieces of this popular and cheap
glass, creating a bright spot on the lives of everyday
the people of the working class during a dark period of America
history.
Before Depression glass came along, colors and patterns

pre-and post-1937 units, respectively. Some
patterns considered highly collectible today from Hocking
include Coronation (Chest band), Fortune, Old Café,
Princess, and Waterford. Anchor Hocking created such
much loved designs as the Manhattan (horizontal ribbed)
design along with the Oyster and Pearl pattern.
Hazel-Atlas Glass Company introduced Florence # 2 (Poppy)
Hairpin (Newport) and Moderntone, while MacBeth Evans
American Sweetheart and creators Petalware on the market.

Many of the glass companies - at least those who survived
the Great Depression - maintain museums in which interested
parties can learn much more about depression and glass
companies that supply it. Credit must be given to these
glass manufacturers to offer simple and
cheap but deliciously appealing to an appreciative audience
at a time when such items were few and far between.
